User Guide: Comprehensive Gematria Analysis Tool
User Guide for the Comprehensive Gematria Analysis Tool. This specialized tool allows you to perform in-depth Gematria analysis on larger portions of Bible text, specifically looking for patterns of word groups whose Gematria values are divisible by selected numbers (e.g., 37, 73, or custom numbers).
1. Overview of the Interface
The Analysis Tool page is divided into two main sections for ease of use:
- Left Pane: Analysis Parameters & Status
- This is where you define the scope and criteria for your analysis. All controls for setting up what text to analyze and how to analyze it are located here.
- It also displays the current status and progress of an ongoing analysis, keeping you informed.
- Right Pane: Analysis Results
- This area displays the findings from your analysis in a clear, scrollable, and sortable table.
This two-pane layout allows you to adjust parameters and immediately see how they might affect the type and volume of results without losing context.
2. Left Pane: Analysis Parameters & Status
This section contains all the controls to meticulously configure your Gematria analysis, along with real-time feedback on the process.
2.1. Analysis Parameters
This is your primary control panel for setting up the analysis.
- Select Book:
- A dropdown menu to choose the Bible book you wish to analyze (e.g., Genesis, Exodus, Matthew).
- The list is populated with books for which the application has loaded data.
- Upon selecting a book, the "Select Chapter(s)" dropdown will be populated. By default, "Chapter 1" of the selected book will be chosen if it exists, facilitating a quick start.
- Select Chapter(s):
- A dropdown menu to choose the specific chapter or chapters within the selected book.
- If the "Analyze a single verse only?" checkbox (detailed below) is NOT checked, this dropdown will also include an option for "All Chapters in Book", allowing for a broad analysis of an entire book.
- When a specific chapter is selected (and not "All Chapters" or if "Analyze a single verse only?" is unchecked), the "Maximum words per group" field (see section 2.1.7) will attempt to intelligently default to the number of words found in the longest verse of that particular chapter. This provides a sensible upper limit for consecutive word group analysis, though you can always override it.
- Select Verse: (This dropdown and its label only appear if "Analyze a single verse only?" is checked)
- Once a book and a specific chapter are selected, and the "Analyze a single verse only?" box is checked, this dropdown becomes active.
- It allows you to pinpoint a single, specific verse from the chosen chapter for a highly focused and detailed analysis.
- Upon chapter selection (in single-verse mode), this dropdown will default to "Verse 1" if it exists in that chapter, or the first available verse.
- Analyze a single verse only? (Checkbox):
- This checkbox fundamentally changes the analysis mode:
- Unchecked (Default Behavior): The tool analyzes word groups within all verses of the selected chapter(s) (or the entire book if "All Chapters" is chosen).
- In this mode, it specifically looks for **consecutive sequences of words**.
- The "Minimum words per group" and "Maximum words per group" input fields are active and determine the length of these consecutive sequences (e.g., analyzing all 2-word phrases, all 3-word phrases, etc., up to the maximum).
- Checked (Single Verse - All Subsets Mode): The tool performs an intensive analysis on the single verse selected in the "Select Verse" dropdown.
- In this mode, it generates and analyzes **all possible non-empty subsets (combinations) of words** from that single verse. The order of words within a chosen subset is preserved as they appear in the verse when forming the string for Gematria calculation. For example, if a verse has words A, B, C, it will check A, B, C, A+B, A+C, B+C, A+B+C.
- The "Minimum words per group" and "Maximum words per group" input fields are hidden and ignored, as all subset lengths (from 1 word up to all words in the verse) are considered.
- Word Limit for Subset Analysis: Due to the exponential nature of subset generation (2N-1 combinations, where N is the number of words), this mode is practically limited to verses containing a maximum of **19 words**. If a selected verse has more than 19 words, an error message will be displayed in the "Analysis Status" area, and the analysis will not proceed for that verse in this mode. The error message will also inform you of the total number of combinations that would have been checked (e.g., "FYI - the verse you selected has X number of possible combinations"). This limit is in place to prevent the browser from becoming unresponsive.
- Gematria Systems to Analyze (Fieldset):
- Provides checkboxes for "Standard", "Reduced", and "Ordinal" Gematria.
- You must select at least one Gematria system. The tool will calculate values using each selected system for every word group or subset.
- The interface will prevent you from unchecking the last selected Gematria system. If you attempt to do so, the checkbox will remain checked.
- Check for Divisibility By (Fieldset):
- This section allows you to specify which numbers the Gematria values should be checked against for divisibility.
- Predefined Divisors:
- Checkbox for "37" (checked by default).
- Checkbox for "73".
- Custom Divisors:
- Check the "Custom:" checkbox to enable the adjacent text input field.
- In the text field, enter one or more positive integer values, separated by commas (e.g.,
7,19,55,153
). - The tool will then also check if Gematria values are divisible by these custom numbers.
- Invalid entries in the custom field (such as text, zero, negative numbers, or numbers already covered by the predefined 37/73 checkboxes if they are also checked) will be ignored. If the "Custom:" box is checked but the input field is empty or contains only invalid numbers, it will not be considered an active divisor source for validation purposes.
- At least one divisor option (either a predefined one like 37 or 73, or the "Custom:" box checked with at least one valid number entered) must be active for the analysis to start. The interface will prevent unchecking the last active divisor option.
- Minimum words per group / Maximum words per group (Input Fields):
- These numeric input fields are **only visible and active if "Analyze a single verse only?" is UNCHECKED**.
- Minimum words per group: Defines the shortest length of *consecutive* word groups to analyze (default is 1, meaning single words will be checked). Must be at least 1.
- Maximum words per group: Defines the longest length of *consecutive* word groups to analyze.
- When a specific chapter is selected (and not "All Chapters"), this field attempts to auto-populate with the word count of the longest verse in that chapter, providing a sensible upper bound. You can always manually change this value.
- If "All Chapters" is selected, it defaults to a more conservative number (e.g., 10) to manage performance across an entire book, but this can be increased by the user.
- This value must be greater than or equal to the "Minimum words per group" value.
- Start Analysis (Button):
- Once all parameters are set to your satisfaction, click this button to begin the Gematria analysis.
- The button will be disabled while an analysis is currently in progress to prevent multiple concurrent analyses.
- Before starting, the tool performs validations on your selections (e.g., ensuring a book/chapter is selected, at least one Gematria system and one divisor are chosen). If validation fails, an error message appears in the "Analysis Status" area.
- Cancel Analysis (Button):
- This button only appears and becomes active once an analysis has started.
- Clicking it will signal the ongoing analysis to stop. The processing will halt at the next convenient point (usually after completing the current verse or a batch of subsets).
- Any results found up to the point of cancellation will still be displayed. The status message will indicate that the analysis was cancelled.
2.2. Analysis Status
This section provides real-time feedback during the analysis process and a summary upon completion or cancellation.
- Status Text Area (e.g., "Ready to start.", "Processing: Revelation 22:13...", "x results found out of 65,535 possible combinations"):
- Displays messages indicating the current state: ready, processing a specific verse, or completed/cancelled.
- For errors in parameter selection or during analysis (like a verse exceeding word limits for subset mode), detailed error messages will appear here.
- Upon successful completion:
- If analyzing chapters (consecutive groups): It will typically state something like "X results found across Y processed verses."
- If analyzing a single verse (all subsets mode): It will state "X results found out of Y possible combinations.", where Y is 2N-1 for N words in the verse.
- Progress Bar:
- Appears and updates during an active analysis to provide a visual indication of progress.
- For chapter/book analysis (consecutive groups), the progress bar typically represents the number of verses processed out of the total selected.
- For single verse (subset) analysis, it represents the number of word subsets processed out of the total possible subsets for that verse.
3. Right Pane: Analysis Results
This section is dedicated to displaying the findings of your comprehensive Gematria analysis.
- Analysis Results (Title): A simple header for this section.
- Copy Analysis Results Table (Icon Button):
- Located at the top right of the results section, depicted by an icon of two overlapping squares (similar to other copy icons in the application).
- Clicking this button will copy the entire content of the results table to your computer's clipboard.
- The data is copied in **Tab-Separated Values (TSV)** format. This format is ideal for easily pasting directly into spreadsheet programs like Microsoft Excel, Google Sheets, LibreOffice Calc, etc., where each piece of information will fall into its own cell.
- This button is disabled if there are no results to copy (e.g., before an analysis is run or if an analysis yields no findings). It becomes enabled once results are displayed.
- Results Table Container:
- This is a scrollable area where the actual results are presented in a structured table.
- If no results match your criteria, a message "No patterns found matching the criteria." will be displayed instead of a table.
- The table has the following columns:
- Book: The Bible book where the identified word group was found (e.g., "Genesis").
- Chapter: The chapter number within that book.
- Verse: The verse number where the word group *begins*.
- Word Group: The actual sequence of Hebrew or Greek words that form the Gematria pattern. For subset analysis, words are shown in their original verse order.
- Gematria Type: Indicates which Gematria system ("Standard", "Reduced", or "Ordinal") was used to calculate the value for this specific finding.
- Value: The calculated Gematria value of the "Word Group" using the specified "Gematria Type". If this value is divisible by 37, it will be highlighted in red. If divisible by 73, it will be highlighted in blue. Custom divisors do not currently have special color highlighting applied to the value itself in the table.
- Divisible By: The number (e.g., 37, 73, or one of your custom numbers) by which the "Value" is evenly divisible. This cell will also be highlighted in red if the divisor is 37, or blue if it's 73.
- The results in the table are automatically sorted for easier review: primarily by Book (in canonical Bible order), then by Chapter number, then by Verse number. Within a verse, results are further sorted by the length of the "Word Group" (shorter groups first), then alphabetically by the "Word Group" text (using Hebrew-aware sorting if applicable), then by "Gematria Type", then by "Value", and finally by the "Divisible By" number. This ensures a consistent and logical presentation of potentially numerous findings.
4. General Workflow Example
- Navigate to the "Comprehensive Analysis" page from the main calculator.
- Select a "Book" (e.g., "Psalms"). The "Chapter" dropdown will populate, defaulting to "Chapter 1".
- **Scenario A (Consecutive groups in a chapter):**
- Leave "Analyze a single verse only?" unchecked.
- Choose "Chapter 23" from the "Select Chapter(s)" dropdown.
- The "Maximum words per group" might auto-update (e.g., to 6, if Psalm 23:4 is the longest with 6 words). You can adjust this, e.g., set Min to 2 and Max to 4.
- Select "Standard" and "Ordinal" under "Gematria Systems to Analyze".
- Ensure "37" is checked under "Check for Divisibility By". Optionally, check "73" or add custom numbers.
- Click "Start Analysis".
- **Scenario B (All subsets of a single verse):**
- Check the "Analyze a single verse only?" box. The "Minimum/Maximum words per group" inputs will disappear. The "Select Verse" dropdown will appear.
- Select "Chapter 1" and then "Verse 3" from their respective dropdowns (assuming Psalms 1:3 has 19 words or fewer).
- Select desired "Gematria Systems" and "Divisibility By" numbers.
- Click "Start Analysis".
- Observe the "Analysis Status" text and progress bar.
- Once complete (or cancelled), review the findings in the "Analysis Results" table on the right.
- If results are found, click the copy icon button to copy the data as TSV for use in other applications.
